R-22, often called Freon, was the standard refrigerant in home air conditioners for decades. Production of R-22 ended in the United States in 2020, so the only supply left is recovered and recycled refrigerant. That makes recharges on older systems increasingly expensive. If your R-22 system has a leak or needs a major repair, replacement is usually the better long-term choice.
How to tell if your system uses R-22
- Check the data plate on the outdoor unit for "R-22" or "HCFC-22"
- Systems installed before about 2010 are the most likely to use R-22
- Ask us during a tune-up and we will confirm it for you
Your options
- Keep running itIf your R-22 system is working and not leaking, you can keep using it. Regular maintenance helps it last.
- Repair a leak and rechargePossible, but costly. Leak repair plus R-22 at $150 to $250 per pound adds up quickly.
- Replace the systemA new system uses a modern refrigerant, is far more efficient and comes with our 15-year parts and labor warranty on new installs.
Why you cannot just switch refrigerants
Newer refrigerants operate at different pressures and use different oils. They cannot simply be added to an R-22 system. Converting an old system is rarely worth it compared with replacing it with a properly matched new system.
What replacing an R-22 system costs
A complete system replacement typically ranges from $7,000 to $18,000 or more. Financing is available through Synchrony, subject to credit approval.
