Repair or replace? How we help you decide
We never push a new system when a repair will do the job. When a system has a major problem, we walk you through the numbers:
- Age of the systemMost systems in Arizona last about 10 to 15 years. Past that point, major repairs are often money spent on equipment near the end of its life.
- Cost of the repairA common rule of thumb: if a repair costs more than about half the price of a new system on an older unit, replacement usually makes more sense.
- Refrigerant typeR-22 is no longer produced, so leaks and recharges on older systems keep getting more expensive.
- Repair historyFrequent breakdowns are a sign more failures are coming.
- Energy costsNewer systems use far less electricity than systems from 15 or 20 years ago.
Signs it is time to replace your system
- Your system is more than 12 to 15 years old
- It uses R-22 refrigerant and has a leak
- The compressor has failed on an older system
- You have had several repairs in the last couple of years
- Energy bills keep rising even with maintenance
- Some rooms are always too hot or too cold
- The system runs constantly and still cannot keep up in summer
Full or partial replacement
In most cases, replacing the indoor and outdoor units together is the best choice. Matched systems deliver their rated efficiency and keep the manufacturer warranty intact. In some situations, such as a newer air handler paired with a failed condenser, a partial replacement can make sense. We will tell you honestly which option fits your system.
We also check your ductwork during every replacement estimate. Leaky, crushed or undersized ducts can keep even a brand-new system from performing as it should, so we will let you know if duct repair or sealing would help.
