Air Conditioning Repair & Troubleshooting

Why is my A/C running but blowing warm air?

The most common causes are a failed capacitor, a bad contactor, a dirty or clogged filter, a frozen evaporator coil or low refrigerant from a leak. Check that your thermostat is set to Cool and your filter is clean, then call us if it still blows warm.

Why won't my A/C turn on at all?

Start with the basics: make sure the thermostat has power and is set to Cool, check your breaker and make sure the outdoor disconnect is on. If those are fine, the problem is often a tripped float switch, a failed transformer, a blown fuse or a control board issue.

Why is my outdoor unit humming but the fan isn't spinning?

A humming outdoor unit with a stopped fan usually means a failed capacitor or a failing condenser fan motor. Turn the system off to protect the compressor and call for service.

What does a capacitor do, and why do they fail so often in Arizona?

A capacitor gives the compressor and fan motors the electrical boost they need to start and keep running. Extreme Arizona heat breaks capacitors down faster than in milder climates, which is why they're one of the most common summer repairs.

How much does it cost to replace an A/C capacitor?

Capacitor replacement typically costs $150 to $450 installed, and it's often a same-visit fix. There's no extra charge if it fails at night or on a weekend.

Why is my A/C freezing up?

Ice on the coil or refrigerant lines is usually caused by restricted airflow, such as a dirty filter, blocked return or weak blower, or by low refrigerant. Turn the system off and switch the fan to On to thaw it, then call us to find and fix the cause.

Why is water leaking from my indoor unit?

Leaks usually come from a clogged condensate drain line, a cracked drain pan, a failed condensate pump or a coil that froze and is melting. Arizona dust clogs drain lines quickly, so clearing the line is often the fix.

My A/C shut off and the float switch tripped. What does that mean?

A float switch shuts the system off when water backs up in the drain pan or line, to prevent water damage. The drain line usually needs to be cleared. Drain line clearing typically costs $100 to $300.

Why does my A/C keep turning on and off?

Short cycling can be caused by an oversized system, a dirty filter, low refrigerant, a failing thermostat or an electrical problem. It wastes energy and wears out the compressor, so it's worth having checked.

Why is my A/C making a loud noise?

Buzzing often points to an electrical part like a contactor or capacitor. Squealing or grinding can mean a failing motor, and rattling may be a loose panel or debris. Banging or clanking inside the outdoor unit should be checked right away.

Why is my A/C running constantly on hot days?

On 110°F-plus afternoons, a properly working system may run almost nonstop. If your home still can't get within about 20 degrees of the outdoor temperature, have the system checked for low refrigerant, a dirty coil or an airflow problem.

Why is my electric bill suddenly so high?

A sudden jump often points to a system working harder than it should because of a dirty coil, a clogged filter, low refrigerant, leaky ductwork or a failing part. A diagnostic can pinpoint the cause.

What does it mean when my A/C is low on refrigerant?

A/C systems don't use up refrigerant, so low refrigerant almost always means there's a leak. The right fix is to find and repair the leak, not just keep adding refrigerant.

Can you still recharge an older R-22 system?

Yes, but R-22 production ended in 2020, so it's expensive and limited. R-22 recharges typically cost $150 to $250 per pound. For older R-22 systems with leaks, replacement is often the better long-term value.

How do I know if my compressor is failing?

Warning signs include warm air, a unit that won't start or trips the breaker, loud clanking or grinding, and a hard-start or humming sound. A diagnostic will confirm whether it's the compressor or a less expensive part like a capacitor or start relay.

What is a hard start kit, and do I need one?

A hard start kit gives an aging compressor extra help starting up, which can reduce strain and extend its life. It can help older systems that struggle to start in extreme heat.

Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?

Repair usually makes sense for newer systems with a single failed part. Replacement is often the better value if your system is over 10 to 15 years old, needs frequent or costly repairs, or uses R-22 refrigerant. We'll walk you through the numbers honestly.

Heating & Heat Pumps

Do you repair heat pumps and furnaces?

Yes. We repair and service heat pumps, gas furnaces, electric furnaces and air handlers with heat strips throughout Surprise and Sun City West.

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heat mode?

It may be in a normal defrost cycle, which lasts a few minutes. If it continues, common causes are a stuck reversing valve, low refrigerant, a thermostat setting problem or failed backup heat strips.

What is a reversing valve?

The reversing valve lets a heat pump switch between cooling and heating. When it fails, the system may only heat or only cool. Replacement typically costs $1,200 to $2,500.

Why is there steam coming from my heat pump in winter?

Light steam from the outdoor unit on a cool morning is usually normal. It happens during the defrost cycle as frost melts off the coil.

Why does my heater smell like something is burning?

A dusty smell the first time you turn on the heat each season is normal and should fade quickly. A strong burning, electrical or plastic smell is not normal. Turn the system off and call us.

Do I really need heating service in Arizona?

Yes. Desert nights in Surprise and Sun City West regularly get cold in winter, and heat pumps and furnaces need attention like any other equipment. A fall tune-up makes sure your heat works when you need it.

What are heat strips?

Heat strips are electric heating elements in the air handler that provide backup or supplemental heat, often paired with a heat pump. If they fail, your home may heat slowly or not at all on the coldest nights.

Why does my furnace turn on and then shut off quickly?

Short cycling in a furnace is often caused by a dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter, overheating from restricted airflow or a thermostat problem. It should be checked for safety and efficiency.

Is a heat pump a good choice in Arizona?

Yes. Heat pumps work very well in the mild Arizona winter, providing efficient heating and cooling from a single system. Many homes in Surprise and Sun City West use them.

Should I have my heating system checked for carbon monoxide?

Yes, if you have any gas appliances, including a gas furnace. A cracked heat exchanger or venting problem can release carbon monoxide. Every home with gas appliances should have working CO detectors.

How much does a heating repair cost?

Heating repair costs vary by the part involved. See our Pricing page for typical ranges, and remember there's never an extra charge for nights, after-hours or weekends.

New System Installation & Replacement

How much does a new A/C system cost in Surprise or Sun City West?

A complete A/C system replacement typically ranges from $7,000 to $18,000 or more, depending on system size, efficiency, equipment type and your home's ductwork. New installs are backed by our 15-year parts and labor warranty.

What warranty do you offer on new installations?

New installs are backed by our 15-year parts and labor warranty.

What brands of A/C and heating equipment do you sell and install?

We sell and install Trane, Lennox, Midea, Goodman/Daikin and TCL equipment.

Which A/C brand is best?

Trane, Lennox, Midea, Goodman/Daikin and TCL all make reliable systems. The best choice depends on your home, your budget and the efficiency you want, and proper sizing and installation matter as much as the brand. We'll walk you through the options honestly.

Can I finance a new A/C or heat pump system?

Yes. Financing for new systems is available through Synchrony, subject to credit approval. New installs are also backed by our 15-year parts and labor warranty.

How long does an air conditioner last in Arizona?

Most central air conditioners and heat pumps last about 10 to 15 years. Long run times and extreme heat can shorten that, so regular maintenance matters.

What size A/C system do I need?

The right size depends on your home's square footage, insulation, windows, sun exposure and ductwork, not just the size of your old unit. We size systems properly so they cool evenly and efficiently.

What happens if my A/C system is the wrong size?

An oversized system short cycles, wastes energy and doesn't remove humidity well. An undersized system runs nonstop and struggles on the hottest days. Proper sizing matters for comfort and equipment life.

What is SEER2?

SEER2 measures how efficiently an air conditioner or heat pump cools over a season under updated testing standards. The higher the SEER2, the less electricity the system uses to cool your home.

Is a higher-efficiency system worth it in Arizona?

Often, yes. Arizona systems run far more hours than in most of the country, so efficiency savings add up faster. We'll help you compare upfront cost against expected energy savings.

Do I need to replace my indoor and outdoor units at the same time?

In most cases, yes. Matched indoor and outdoor units are designed to work together, deliver their rated efficiency and keep the manufacturer warranty intact.

What refrigerant do new systems use?

New air conditioners and heat pumps now use newer, lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32, replacing R-410A under federal rules. Older systems can still be serviced.

Should I replace my R-22 air conditioner?

If your R-22 system needs a major repair or has a refrigerant leak, replacement is usually the better value. R-22 is no longer produced, so recharges keep getting more expensive.

How long does a new A/C installation take?

Most complete system replacements take about one day. Jobs that include ductwork changes or other modifications may take longer.

Will you remove my old equipment?

Yes. When we replace a system, we remove your old equipment and recover the refrigerant properly, as required by federal rules.

Do you need a permit to replace an A/C system?

Permit requirements depend on the city or county and the scope of the work. We'll let you know what applies to your installation.

Should I choose a heat pump or an A/C with a furnace?

Both work well in Arizona. Heat pumps are efficient for our mild winters and often simplest. Homes with existing gas may prefer a gas furnace. We'll explain the pros and cons for your home.

Can you replace just the condenser or just the air handler?

Sometimes, yes. Condenser replacement typically runs $2,500 to $6,000, and air handler replacement $2,000 to $5,000. We'll tell you honestly whether a partial replacement makes sense for your system.

How do I know it's time to replace my system?

Common signs are age over 10 to 15 years, frequent breakdowns, rising energy bills, uneven cooling, R-22 refrigerant or a major failure like a compressor. We'll give you an honest repair-versus-replace comparison.

Maintenance & Tune-Ups

How often should I have my A/C serviced in Arizona?

We recommend professional maintenance twice a year: in spring before cooling season and in fall before heating season. Arizona heat and dust make regular tune-ups especially important.

How much is an A/C tune-up?

An annual A/C tune-up typically costs $95 to $250.

What's included in an A/C tune-up?

A tune-up typically includes checking electrical components and connections, testing capacitors and contactors, checking refrigerant pressures, inspecting and cleaning coils as needed, clearing the drain line and checking airflow and thermostat operation.

Does regular maintenance really make a difference?

Yes. Maintenance catches small problems like a weak capacitor or clogged drain before they cause a breakdown, helps your system run efficiently and can extend its life.

How often should I change my air filter?

Check standard 1-inch filters monthly and replace them every one to three months. In Arizona summers, dust and long run times often mean monthly changes. Thicker media filters last longer.

Should I clean my outdoor unit myself?

You can gently rinse dust and debris off the outdoor coil with a garden hose (never a pressure washer) with the power off. Keep plants and debris at least two feet away. A professional coil cleaning goes deeper.

Why does coil cleaning matter in Arizona?

Dust, pollen and debris coat the coils and act like insulation, making the system work harder and use more energy. Condenser coil cleaning typically costs $125 to $300.

Can maintenance prevent a breakdown in the middle of summer?

It can't prevent every failure, but it significantly lowers the risk by catching weak parts and clogs before peak heat. And if something does fail at night or on a weekend, there's no extra charge.

Is it normal for my outdoor unit to be hot?

Yes. The outdoor unit releases the heat removed from your home, so warm air blowing from the top fan is normal while it's cooling.

Should I cover my outdoor unit in winter?

Generally no, especially with a heat pump, which runs in winter too. Covers can trap moisture and invite pests. Keeping the area clear of debris is enough.

What should I do before calling for service?

Check that the thermostat is set correctly and has power, the breaker isn't tripped, the outdoor disconnect is on and your filter isn't clogged. If it still isn't working, call 833-692-9776. There's no extra charge for nights, after-hours or weekends.

Ductwork

How do I know if my ducts are leaking?

Warning signs include rooms that are hard to cool, high energy bills, dusty rooms, whistling or rattling sounds and a hot or stuffy attic space near duct runs. A duct inspection can find the leaks.

How much air do leaky ducts waste?

According to ENERGY STAR, a typical home loses about 20 to 30 percent of the air moving through its duct system to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts.

Why are ducts in Arizona attics such a problem?

Most Arizona homes have ductwork in the attic, where summer temperatures can climb well above 130°F. Leaky or poorly insulated ducts there pull in hot attic air and waste cooling.

What is duct sealing?

Duct sealing closes leaks at joints, seams and connections with professional mastic or approved materials. Duct sealing typically costs $600 to $2,500.

How much does duct repair cost?

Duct repair typically costs $300 to $2,000, depending on how much ductwork is damaged and how accessible it is.

Why is one room always hotter than the rest of the house?

Uneven temperatures are often caused by leaky or crushed ducts, undersized ductwork, poor return airflow or a room with heavy sun exposure. A duct inspection can find the cause.

What is a return air modification?

A return air modification adds or enlarges return air pathways so your system can breathe properly. Restricted return air reduces efficiency and comfort. It typically costs $500 to $2,000.

Can bad ductwork damage my A/C system?

Yes. Restricted or leaky ducts make your system work harder, which can lead to frozen coils, overheated motors and shorter equipment life.

Should I replace my ducts when I replace my A/C?

Not always. If your ducts are in good shape and properly sized, they can often be reused. If they're old, damaged, leaky or undersized, repairing or replacing them helps your new system perform as designed.

Do you repair flex duct in attics?

Yes. We repair disconnected, crushed, torn and poorly supported flex duct, which is common in Arizona attics.

Duct Cleaning

Do you offer air duct cleaning?

Yes. We clean residential and commercial air ducts. Residential duct cleaning is $800 per A/C system, and commercial duct cleaning is quoted based on the building. There's no extra charge for night or weekend appointments.

How much does air duct cleaning cost?

Residential duct cleaning is $800 per A/C system. Commercial duct cleaning is quoted based on the size and layout of the building. Call 833-692-9776 to schedule or request a commercial quote.

How often should air ducts be cleaned?

There's no single rule. Many homes benefit from cleaning every few years, but it's most important when there's visible dust or debris coming from vents, after renovation, if pests got into the ducts or if there's visible mold growth.

What are signs my ducts need cleaning?

Signs include dust blowing from vents, dust buildup soon after cleaning, visible debris in the ducts, musty odors, evidence of pests and recent remodeling or construction.

Does duct cleaning help with allergies?

It can help when ducts contain heavy dust, debris, pet hair or other buildup. For ongoing allergy relief, pairing clean ducts with better filtration usually makes the biggest difference.

Is duct cleaning worth it in Arizona?

Arizona's dust storms and dry climate mean more dust enters homes, so duct cleaning can be worthwhile, especially if you see dust blowing from vents or have had pests, construction or mold issues.

How long does duct cleaning take?

Most homes take a few hours, depending on the size of the home and the number of vents.

Will duct cleaning make a mess in my home?

Professional duct cleaning uses equipment that keeps the ducts under negative pressure, so loosened dust is pulled away from your living space rather than blown into it. We protect your home and clean up when we're done.

Should I clean my ducts before installing a new A/C system?

It's a good idea if your ducts are dusty or dirty, so your new system starts off with clean air pathways and a clean coil.

Does duct cleaning lower my energy bill?

Heavy buildup can restrict airflow, so cleaning can help in those cases. For energy savings, sealing leaky ducts usually has a bigger impact than cleaning.

What's the difference between duct cleaning and duct sealing?

Duct cleaning removes dust and debris from inside your ducts. Duct sealing closes leaks so cooled air reaches your rooms instead of your attic. Many homes benefit from both.

Thermostats & Indoor Air Quality

What temperature should I set my thermostat in the Arizona summer?

Many Arizona utilities recommend about 78°F when you're home and a few degrees higher when you're away. A smart thermostat can handle this automatically.

Is a smart thermostat worth it?

For most homes, yes. Smart thermostats make it easy to schedule temperatures, adjust from your phone and track energy use. Smart thermostat installation typically costs $250 to $600.

Why does my thermostat say one temperature but the house feels different?

The thermostat may be in direct sun, near a heat source, poorly calibrated or failing. Duct or airflow problems can also make rooms feel different from the thermostat reading.

What does a UV light do in an A/C system?

A UV light installed near the indoor coil helps reduce mold and bacteria growth on the coil and drain pan. UV light installation typically costs $700 to $1,500.

Do whole-home air purifiers work?

Whole-home purification systems work with your HVAC system to capture or reduce particles and airborne contaminants throughout the house. They typically cost $1,000 to $3,000 installed.

What is a media filter cabinet?

A media filter cabinet holds a thicker, high-capacity filter that captures more dust and allergens and lasts longer than a standard 1-inch filter. Installation typically costs $500 to $1,200.

Do I need a surge protector for my A/C?

A surge protector helps guard your A/C's compressor and control board against power surges from monsoon lightning and grid fluctuations. Installation typically costs $300 to $700.

What MERV filter rating should I use?

Most homes do well with a MERV 8 to 11 filter. Higher ratings trap more particles but can restrict airflow on some systems, so ask us what your system can handle.

Commercial HVAC & Walk-In Coolers

Do you service commercial heating and air conditioning?

Yes. We service and repair commercial HVAC equipment as well as residential systems, for all brands.

Do you repair walk-in coolers?

Yes. We service and repair walk-in coolers. A failing cooler can put inventory at risk fast, so call 833-692-9776 as soon as you notice a problem. There's no extra charge for nights, after-hours or weekends.

What are signs my walk-in cooler needs service?

Common warning signs include the box not holding temperature, ice buildup on the evaporator coil, water on the floor, a compressor that runs constantly or short cycles, unusual noises and door gaskets that don't seal.

Do you charge extra for commercial service after hours?

No. Our no-extra-charge policy for nights, after-hours and weekends applies to commercial customers too.

Arizona Comfort & Energy Savings

How can I lower my A/C bill in the summer?

Change filters regularly, keep the thermostat at a steady temperature, use ceiling fans, close blinds on sunny windows, seal leaky ducts and schedule a spring tune-up.

How hot is too hot inside my house?

If your home climbs above about 85°F with the A/C running, or can't stay within about 20 degrees of the outdoor temperature, have the system checked. Extreme indoor heat is dangerous, especially for seniors, children and pets. Call 833-692-9776. There's never an extra charge for nights, after-hours or weekends.

What should I do if my A/C stops working during extreme heat?

Close blinds, stay on the lowest floor, use fans, drink water and check on family members, especially seniors. Then call 833-692-9776. We don't charge extra for nights, after-hours or weekends.

Can monsoon storms damage my A/C?

Yes. Lightning and power surges can damage capacitors, contactors and control boards, and dust storms clog coils. A surge protector and a post-monsoon checkup help.

Should I turn my A/C off when I leave for the day?

It's usually better to raise the temperature a few degrees rather than turn the system off. In Arizona heat, a home that gets very hot can take hours to cool back down.

Do ceiling fans help save energy?

Yes. Ceiling fans make you feel several degrees cooler, so you can set the thermostat a bit higher. Turn them off when you leave the room, because they cool people, not rooms.

Why does my home feel dusty even with the A/C running?

Dust can come from leaky return ducts pulling in attic air, a low-quality filter or dirty ducts. Duct sealing, better filtration and duct cleaning can all help.

Is it normal for my A/C to struggle on the hottest days?

Most systems are designed to hold a certain temperature difference from outdoors. On 115°F days, even a healthy system works hard. If it can't keep up, a tune-up or diagnostic can find what's holding it back.
